About Troop 1018

Troop 1018 is located in Dranesville, Virginia, about 25 miles west of Washington, DC, just minutes from Reston, Sterling, Great Falls, and Herndon. Although Dranesville exists today as little more than a dot on the map, it has a rich and colorful history and we invite you to read about it by following the "Dranesville History" link at the left.

BSA Troop 1018 is sponsored by the Dranesville United Methodist Church and is part of the Powhatan District ofThree Scouts with backpacks at the western end of the C&O Canalthe National Capital Area Council.  We meet every Monday evening in the Fellowship Hall at the church from 7:30 p.m. until 9:00 p.m.  1018 is a medium sized troop (about 45 registered Scouts), emphasizing a wide range of activities for both younger and older Scouts.  We have an active outdoor program with at least one major outdoor activity scheduled each month.

Each summer we schedule two summer camps -- one "traditional" camp and one "high adventure" camp. The traditional camp is open to all boys and offers activities for all levels and ages. We cycle through a number of camps to provide variety for our Scouts.  For our traditional camp experience, in recent years we've attended Goshen, Rock Enon, Rodney, and Hawk Mountain.  High Adventure camps are designed around more challenging themes and generally carry a minimum age requrement of 14 years old.  We send crews to different high adventure camps each year and routinely visit the Kandersteg International Scout Centre in Switzerland, Philmont (New Mexico), Northern Tier (Minnesota), and Sea Base (Florida Keys).  For a more complete listing of our activities, including pictures of our many trips, check out the "past activities" link on the left.  Information about this year's camps can be found on the "summer camps" link.

We are happy to wecome new Scouts at any time, whether you're bridging from Cub Scouts or have no previous Scouting experience.  Scouting is open to all boys from age 11 - 17 -- you need not start at age 11 -- as a matter of fact, we've had boys join the program as late as age 16 and thoroughtly and successfully enjoyed their Scouting experience.

We're always looking for adults who would like to help with the Scouting program.  Adult volunteers can participate as little or as much as their schedules allow.  Please contact us for more information.

We're proud of the many Troop 1018 Scouts that have attained Scouitng's highest honor, the rank of Eagle Scout.  For a complete listing of our Eagles follow the "Our Eagles" link at the left.
