1 gallon equals 4 quarts

1 pound dry weight equals 16 ounces

8 ounces liquid equals one cup; 16 ounces equals one pint; 32 ounces equals one quart

"lb." stands for one pound dry weight

"pinch" is the amount of dry spice you can pick up between your thumb and index finger

a "heaping" teaspoon or tablespoon is as much as you can pile on the measuring spoon

"parts" refers to proportions -- one part pasta to two parts water means whatever amount of pasta you use, double that amount when adding water
