Our intrepid crew covered 60 miles in five days of backpacking. The trip began with a trip on the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad with a round trip from Cumberland to Frostberg, MD and back. Following that we were off on the backpacking trip, starting at the former terminus of the canal (Milepost 184.5). From its completion in 1850 until it ceased operation in 1924, the C&O canal was a major means of moving freight through the Potomac River valley.
Our group followed the towpath from Cumberland to Hancock, MD, camping at hiker/biker overnight campsites along the way.
