Winter Camping at Elizabeth Furnace, VA

13 - 15 Jan 2006

Our fourth annual winter campout at Elizabeth Furnace lived up to its reputation.  Temperatures at night dropped down to 21 degrees, but we also enjoyed the character building benefits of wind, rain, and sleet.  Did we ever have fun!

Well, it actually was fairly warm when we arrived . . .

Hanging out around the campfire

After a great deal of debate, someone wins the honor of washing dishes                                            Mr Collins demonstrates the art of staying dry

His royal Eagle-Scoutness                                                       Off on a hike . . .

. . . to see the Pig Iron Trail                                                               Wagon from the old iron industry days

Enjoying the rain, sleet, and snow                                                                                   Checking out the collier's hut

We all learned the finer points of pig iron production.

Mr Collins' compass points to a big hunk of pig iron                          Standing in front of the furnace

Smiling Scoutmaster watching character building taking place                     Meanwhile, back at the campsite . . . there's nothing like a warm campfire

And, of course, the sun came out on the last day as we were packing up to leave.  But a great time was had by all.
