Emergency Preparedness Merit Badge Course
Be prepared by learning the actions that can be helpful and needed before, during, and after an emergency. This badge is Eagle-required.
Scoutmaster Stephen Jancich is a technical advisor for the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

Date: Saturday - June 1, 2019
Restrictions: This class is for scouts ages 10 years 11 months to 18 years. Maximum number of students: 20.
Prerequisites:
Requirement 1 - Earn the First Aid merit badge.
Requirement 2(b) Using a chart, graph, spreadsheet, or another method approved by your counselor, demonstrate your understanding of each aspect of emergency preparedness listed in requirement 2(a) (prevention, protection, mitigation, response, and recovery) for 10 emergency situations from the list below. You must use the first five situations listed below in boldface, plus any other five of your choice. Discuss your findings with your counselor.
Home kitchen fire
Home basement/storage room/garage fire
Explosion in the home
Automobile crash
Food-borne disease (food poisoning)
Fire or explosion in a public place
Vehicle stalled in the desert
Vehicle trapped in a blizzard
Earthquake or tsunami
Mountain/backcountry accident
Boating or water accident
Gas leak in a home or a building
Tornado or hurricane
Major flooding or a flash flood
Toxic chemical spills and releases
Nuclear power plant emergency
Avalanche (snowslide or rockslide)
Violence in a public place
Requirement 2(c) - Meet with and teach your family how to get or build a kit, make a plan, and be informed for the situations on the chart you created for requirement 2(b). Complete a family plan. Then meet with your counselor and report on your family meeting, discuss their responses, and share your family plan.
Everything else will be covered in class.
What to bring:
Your First Aid merit badge card or award card (a photocopy is OK) from Requirement 1.
Your chart, graph, spreadsheet or other method from Requirement 2(b).
Your family plan from Requirement 2(c)
A blue card approved and signed by your scoutmaster
Notepad
Pen or pencil
Lunch
Partial completion:
If any of the prerequisites are not completed before the class, partial completion credit will be given for the merit badge, and our counselors can award full completion later after verification that Requirements 1, 2(b) and 2(c) have been completed. Blue cards will be filled out for all completed requirements and returned to the scouts.
